Why I Chose to Do Free Work During My Business Growing Pains
I’ve been pretty open about my business going through some growing pains lately. I wouldn’t call it suffering—it’s just part of the evolution. So, what did I decide to do? Free work. It might not have been the most strategic move, but it helped me spiritually and allowed me to serve others while gaining exposure. I reached out to people I truly believed in—great people with great products, most of whom go to my church. I cared about them, and I saw potential in what they were doing, so I offered my services without a price tag attached.
The Intent Behind Free Work: Serving, Connecting, and Gaining Exposure
The reason I did this wasn’t just to help; it was also to get my name out there, to practice my craft, and to explore how I could provide value. For each project, I went all in, delivering the full experience—brainstorming sessions, scripting, ideation, filming, editing, and even down to the thumbnails and final delivery. I wanted each of them to feel the premium service without worrying about the cost, giving them the best treatment I could offer.
The Projects: Real People, Real Impact
Marshall’s Ads:
I quickly developed creative strategies for Marshall, shooting three ads and guiding him through the entire filming process. It was fast-paced, but seeing his product shine was worth every minute.Lorenzo’s Strategy:
We connected over text, and I crafted a marketing approach that would help his business stand out. It wasn’t just about filming; it was about understanding him and his goals.Brittany and Leon’s EV Revival:
Their EV mechanic shop repairs batteries at a fraction of the cost, and I believed in their mission. I was able to capture their story and help them reach more people with content that truly resonated.Bart’s Men’s Coaching Group:
Bart’s mission to help men lead their families and become stronger in all aspects of life really struck a chord with me. I got to dive deep into his coaching group, capturing his message and amplifying his reach.
The Lessons Learned: Giving Value and Setting Boundaries
This experience taught me a lot. It reinforced the importance of serving and building connections, but it also reminded me that giving away too much can drain you. Free work shouldn’t become a habit—it’s about finding balance and knowing when to set boundaries. It’s a powerful way to grow, but it’s also a reminder to value your own time and energy.
At the end of the day, these projects weren’t just about exposure; they were about connecting with people I care about and refining my skills. I’m grateful for the lessons and look forward to taking what I’ve learned into future projects—paid or not.
